The STory

When I ran WheatBerry Bakery and Cafe in Amherst, my primary mission was sourcing local ingredients of exceptional quality.  Alongside all the fresh produce, meats, cheeses, dairy and grains, preserved farm products were a critical element. The Farmer’s Pantry Share brings together all the amazing preserves we sourced for our kitchen, all in one place. Pantry shares are distributed at the same time and place as Grain and Rice shares, so you can stock up in one stop. Just like the farms that grow our grains, these are farmer’s I know, trust and respect.  I’m honored to offer their beautiful products in the share every year. Meet the farmers below!

the kitchen garden

Kitchen Garden Farm is a 50-acre, Certified Organic vegetable farm in Sunderland, MA founded by Tim Wilcox and Caroline Pam. I met these guys at the Garlic and Arts Festival back in 2007, and could immediately tell they were up to something exciting.

Specializing in growing the finest chilies from around the globe, they have become the ultimate source for all things spicy. They offer award winning sriracha and fire-roasted salsas, whole dried chillies, flakes and powders – ancho, pimente de espeltte, calabrian, chipotle, thai, serrano, paprika passata, giardiniera and dried herbs like thyme and oregano. The flavor, color and aroma of these products are at the top of the game and we’re so lucky to have these guys in our neighborhood!

old friends farm

I met Missy and Casey (owner’s and operators of Old Friends Farm) back in 2006 at the Greenfield Farmer’s Market where I was vending Wheatberry goods for the first time. They had incredible salad greens and the most gorgeous flowers. Over the years, they have expanded into a variety of things, most notably for our pantry share, ginger and ginger syrup, as well as herbal tea and several exceptional spice blends.

Their deep organic growing methods and excellent business practices shine through in the awesome products we have grown to love more and more over the years. .

I also met Patti and Ralph when I was vending at the Greenfield farmer’s market.  A small family farm nestled in the rolling hills of southwestern New Hampshire, they’ve been farming organically for more than 40 years, specializing in heirloom berries, fruits and herbs. They began selling preserves at farmers’ markets after realizing it was the way to turn their delicate and perishable berries into something that could be enjoyed year-round.

warm colors apiary

Dan and Bonita Conlon are another farming couple I met at the Greenfield market! They founded Warm Colors Apiary in 2000 to produce honey from flowers in western Massachusetts. Located on eighty acres of woodland, open fields, and wetlands, their land provides a variety and abundance of nectar and pollen plants that bloom from early spring to late fall, making it an ideal habitat for honeybees.

larch hanson – the seaweed man

Larch Hanson has been harvesting Atlantic seaweeds and other sea vegetables off the coast of Maine for over four decades. He’s the most dedicated wild-harvester I’ve ever encountered. He can tell you everything about seaweed, from how to spot Alaria in the surf, to where you can find the reddest, most mineral-rich dulse. He also offers kelp and dried soup mix.

sweet birch herbals

I first met Hannah Jacobson-Hardy on a wild edibles walk. Also the founder of Full Moon Ghee, Hannah is a community herbalist devoted to providing high-quality, plant-based medicines that are locally grown and sustainably wild-crafted. We’re excited to bring you her small-batch teas, expertly blended with herbs grown with organic, no-till methods in the hills of Ashfield, Massachusetts.

hosta hill

Hostal Hill has, hands-down, the best lacto-fermented vegetables you can find anywhere. Husband and wife Abe Hunrichs and Maddie Elling of Berkshire of Country make their kimchi, hot sauce and sauerkraut the traditional way: no vinegar, just organic vegetables, sea salt and time!  We’re proud to bring you their Crimson Kraut (with red cabbage, daikon and red pepper) GochuCurry Kraut (a fusion of Indian curry and Korean hot peppers) as well as their traditional-style, green cabbage Kraut, and red and green hot sauces. Packaged by hand and sold raw and unpasteurized.
